Auto insurance is required in most states, which means insurance companies don’t have to convince you to buy it, as much as sell you on their company instead of the competition. One way they do this is with discounts.
Most insurance companies categorize discount types into three main groups: driver discounts (discounts based on you), vehicle discounts (discounts based on your car), and policy discounts (discounts having to with other policies you have, or how you pay).
Before you buy car insurance, you can save money right off the bat by ensuring that you’re buying the right amount of car insurance.

Driver discounts
Driver discounts are all based on you. There are some things, like age, that you can’t actively affect, but you can use some of your personal details to save on your premiums.
Affiliation discounts
Many car insurance companies will give discounts based on connections with certain groups. Active military members and various types of federal employees can often get car insurance at a reduced rate. Some, but not all insurers offer educator discounts.
You can also look for more employer-specific discounts and can get discounts for being an alumnus of some schools, fraternities and sororities, or other groups. It’s always worth looking!
Student discounts
Student discounts are popular because they make it more affordable for parents to buy car insurance for young drivers, which is more expensive.
The most common type of student discount is a good student discount. If a full-time student keeps his or her grades above a certain threshold, rates stay low. Many insurers offer discounts for college students while they’re in college, but they also, as previously mentioned, provide some college alumni discounts.
Good driver discounts
Good driver discounts are based on how many claims you’ve filed, how many times you get ticketed, etc. If you can go three to five years (depending on the company) without any incidents, you might be able to reduce your insurance premiums.
Completing a driver’s ed courses can often get you a discount too. Although that’s more common with new drivers, defensive driving courses can accomplish the same results.
Lastly, look for low-mileage discounts. The less you drive, the less likely you are to be in an accident. Many insurers will give you a break for having a low annual mileage.
Policy discounts
Insurers want to give you every reason to stay with them and do as much business with them as possible.
Bundling, multi-car, and multi-policy discounts
Bundling, multi-car, and multi-policy discounts makes this possible for them. Most insurers offer more insurance products than auto just insurance, and they want you to buy those too. When you get your car insurance through a certain insurer, most likely, you’ll get a discount if you get another type of insurance through in addition. If you have multiple cars, insuring them all through the same insurance company can get you a multi-car or multi-policy discount.
Family plan discounts are also common for auto insurance, and having all of your plans with one company is less hassle, since you don’t have to make payments to multiple companies at different times.
Policy payment discounts
How you pay can also save you money. Some insurers offer a discount for going paperless with your billing, or for paying your premium yearly instead of monthly.
When it’s time to renew your insurance, most insurers also offer a renewal discount to keep you from switching to a different insurer.
To counter act this, however, there are transfer or switch discounts which give you a discount for leaving their competition.
There’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to your auto insurance, and which car insurance discounts you’re eligible for can play a big role in which carrier you go with and how much you’ll pay every year.
